Leveraging Artificial Intelligence to Alleviate Nurse Workload and Improve Patient Care
Abstract
The growing demand for healthcare services, coupled with global nursing shortages, has led to increased workloads and burnout among nurses, ultimately impacting patient care quality. Artificial intelligence (AI) presents a promising solution to alleviate these challenges by optimizing nursing workflows, reducing administrative burdens, and enhancing patient monitoring. This review explores how AI-driven technologies can support nurses by automating documentation, improving resource allocation, and facilitating real-time patient assessments. AI-powered predictive analytics and early warning systems enable proactive patient care by identifying critical conditions before they escalate, reducing response times and minimizing medical errors. Additionally, AI-enabled virtual assistants and chatbots streamline communication by handling routine inquiries, allowing nurses to focus on direct patient interactions. Robotic systems further contribute by assisting with patient lifting, medication dispensing, and supply management, reducing physical strain on nurses. Beyond workload reduction, AI enhances patient outcomes through personalized treatment recommendations and precision medicine applications. Wearable AI devices provide continuous health monitoring, improving early detection of complications and ensuring timely interventions. However, despite these benefits, AI implementation in healthcare faces challenges, including data privacy concerns, resistance to adoption, and integration complexities. Addressing these issues requires clear regulatory frameworks, adequate training for healthcare professionals, and ethical guidelines to ensure AI serves as a supportive tool rather than a replacement for human caregivers. Leveraging AI in nursing has the potential to improve efficiency, reduce stress on healthcare workers, and enhance patient safety and care quality. Future efforts should focus on refining AI algorithms, fostering nurse-AI collaboration, and implementing policies that promote responsible AI use in healthcare. By strategically integrating AI technologies, healthcare systems can better support nurses, optimize resources, and ultimately improve patient outcomes in an increasingly complex medical environment.
